The power of inspirational quotes

Those who know me would easily say I’m quite the quote person.
I often gravitate around inspirational quotes as a way to self-reflect on whatever it is that I’m doing and aiming at doing.
My fascination for inspirational quotes most likely stems from the connection and resonance with certain words, actions or people, and the power they have to stayed focused and aligned with my values.
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
“Do not wait for someone else to come and speak for you. It’s you who can change the world.”
~Malala Yousafzai“Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection.”
~Mark Twain“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
~Eleanor Roosevelt“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”
~ Benjamin Franklin
Have you ever wondered why we gravitate around quotes? and why some people even call them mantras?
Here’s why according to author Gwen Moran:
“[…] the appeal appears to lie in a combination of good wordsmithing, motivational psychology, and a measure of self-selection.”
For instance, psychologist and motivation expert, Jonathan Fader, PhD, founder of the Union Square Practice in New York City says:
“There’s a little bit of implicit coaching that’s happening when you’re reading it. It’s building that self-efficacy in that kind of dialogue that you’re having with yourself.”
For Ward Farnsworth, dean of the University of Texas School of Law and author of Farnsworth’s Classical English Rhetoric, it’s about the power of language:
“Phrasing contributes to effectiveness—for better or worse. […] While there are many ways to say the same thing, one may be more pleasing and convincing than all the others because of the way words are arranged.”
And Media psychology expert and communications consultant Scott Sobel argues about the primal aspect:
“Humans are aspirational. We want to look up to role models and leaders and follow what they ask […]. Leaders and their words–inspirational quotes–affect us on a primal level.”
